Confirmation and Reception
Confirmation and Reception
"Confirmation is the rite in which we express a mature commitment to Christ, and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop."
— The Book of Common Prayer (1979)
The journey of faith is lifelong—and often marked by new seasons of commitment and discovery. In the sacrament of Confirmation, those baptized as children or new to the Episcopal Church affirm their faith with intention and are strengthened by the laying on of hands and the prayer of the bishop. It is a mature “yes” to the life of Christ already begun in Baptism.
In Reception, those baptized and confirmed in another tradition are formally received into the fellowship of the Episcopal Church. Whether through Confirmation or Reception, this is a sacred act of belonging—rooted in gratitude and grounded in grace. It is not the completion of a journey, but the deepening of one already underway.
