Burial

Burial of the Dead

A Christian crucifix with a wooden Jesus on the cross and two brass candlesticks with unlit white candles on either side, placed on a wooden surface against a decorated gold and gray patterned wall.

In the face of death, the Church speaks not of finality but of hope. The liturgy for the Burial of the Dead is a bold act of Christian trust: it affirms that, even in our grief, life is changed, not ended. We commend the dead to God's eternal mercy, confident in the resurrection promised in Christ.

At the Church of the Incarnation, we walk with families through the planning of funerals and memorial services. With scripture, prayer, and the beauty of sacred music, we give thanks for the lives of those we love, mourn their loss, and entrust them to the heart of God.

In the words of Rowan Williams, death does not have the last word: “the last word is joy—God’s joy in bringing all things to fulfillment in Christ.”
