The holidays can be particularly hard on those in need, especially families spending the season in a shelter.

REACH of Macon and Jackson Counties currently has six families, with eleven children between them, staying at their shelter. In addition, REACH has communal clients they are caring for over the holidays, which increases their caseload by twenty families with 35-40 children.

“Everyone deserves a Christmas, all children and adults should feel a sense of hope and that others really care,” said Andrea Anderson, director of REACH. “If people could feel the excitement and joy of the children when they saw our Christmas decorations for the shelter, I think it bring joy to even the most hardened ‘Grinches’.”
REACH asks the community to help make sure that each family can wake up on Christmas morning with something special under the tree. There are still families that need sponsors for Christmas. Contact REACH at 828-369-5544 or 828-526-8969 for more information. Patricia Catchings will be responsible for taking the gifts to the shelter before the December 12th deadline. She can be reached at 601-888-0786 or 828-482-1608.

Other suggestions for donation are those of crafts for the children or gift cards for activities like movies, skating, and holiday events, or for gas or food. In addition, you may donate towards some of the ongoing needs of the shelter such as diapers, laundry detergent, and personal hygiene items.
REACH supports many people in our community not only through the shelter, but through court advocacy, teaching life skills, crisis intervention, prevention programming, and other services. Please consider donating to this organization at Christmas and throughout the year to support their tireless efforts.
